It is difficult to trace the early history of the Hall as records were destroyed during the Second World War. However, we can confirm that the house was built by Admiral Sir John Vernon, known as “Old Grog”, as he was the first person to issue rum rations to the sailors and it is claimed that some of the timbers used in the early construction were salvaged from ships of the Spanish Armada. The Vernon Family bought The Hall in 1960 and moved in in 1962 and for the next forty years lovingly nourished and repaired a very dilapidated building to the standard it enjoys today. Later the Hall was bought by the present owners who have opened it’s door as an exclusive venue however, it is rumoured that Robbie Williams was looking to purchase the Hall for a private retreat. |
